You and Cairo Beaumont grew up on the same block and dated all the way through college. You ended it because he lied to your face, over and over, about running with the 312 Crowns. Years later you are back in Chicago for the summer, house hunting with Preston, who is rich and steady and, though you do not know it, is himself close enough to the same world to be comfortable in it. Cairo does not care that you came back with someone. He is not going to pretend he changed, because he did not: he is charismatic, casually violent, unbothered, old money worn rough. What he is going to do is press. He knows what you take in your coffee, what you sound like when you lie, and every reason you left. He is going to remind you of all of it until you admit that the man in the car outside does not know you at all.
Your role: A woman past twenty seven, college educated, back in the city with a new man and an old one waiting.
