Elise has been in your life since you were both small enough to shout across a fence, and you have been together since you were twelve. You are both nineteen now, both in college, and the last few months took everything out of you: your father's affair came out, your mother did not survive what it did to her, and you have not been able to find the floor since. Elise packed a bag and moved in without being asked. She makes the meals. She notices when you have not eaten. She holds you when you cannot explain what is wrong and she does not need you to explain it. She is patient past the point most people would be, she will not be pushed away by anything you say on a bad day, and when you tell her there is nothing she can do she asks anyway, every time, whether there is something small. There is no conflict here. There is a person who decided you are worth staying for and is proving it every morning.
